Lawrence (L.V.) Vernon Johnson

Lawrence Vernon Johnson, 89, Stanley, passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2012 in the Mountrail Bethel Home in Stanley.

L.V. was born June 7, 1922 on a farm near Niagara, ND, the son of Vance and Mabel (Sorum) Johnson. He attended the country grade school through 8th grade and graduated High School from Petersburg ND. He worked as a welder in Bremerton, WA. L.V. entered the Army Air Force and served in WWII European Theatre in Italy, from 1943 to 1945. He graduated from NDSU with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Education. He taught Vocational Agriculture in Lakota, ND for 2 years and then became County Agent in Mountrail County in 1951. He worked for Farmers Union Insurance for 2 years, and continued his career at Cenex as an agricultural sales representative and manager of soil service centers in Tioga and Crosby, ND. He retired in 1984.

He married Marion Lybeck on August 29, 1948 at United Lutheran Church in Grand Forks, ND. They had 4 children.

L.V. was a member of the American Lutheran Church of Stanley, the American Legion and the Stanley Lion’s Club. His cabin on Lake Sakakawea was where he enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed outdoor projects at the lake. He made it such a special place for all his family and friends to get together. He enjoyed fishing, boating and puttering on projects.

L.V. is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marion, Stanley; sons, Kent Johnson, Coos Bay, OR, Brad (Denise) Johnson, Crosby, ND, Roger (Delane) Johnson, Grand Forks, ND, and a daughter Kathy (Gary) Thompson, Grand Forks, ND; grandchildren: Rodney (Nicole) Johnson, Annalise (Hide) Suzuki, Alex (Gwen) Thompson, Sarah (Justin) Hochhalter, Loren (Tia) Johnson, Kenya Amanda Kraft, Angela Thompson, Allison Johnson, and Jo Beth Johnson; great grandchilden: Elydie, Pax and DeAnn Alise; several nieces and nephews.

L.V was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Margie Broton.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, June 9th at 11:00 AM at American Lutheran Church, Stanley, ND. Burial will follow the service at Fairview Cemetery, Stanley. Visitation is Friday, June 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Springan Funeral Home, Stanley.
