Viola Vera (Godejohn) Erie was born April 18, 1930 in White Earth, ND to Maynard and Annie Godejohn. She attended school in White Earth through the 10th grade. She later worked for Carl and Annie Erie, where she met Arnold. Viola and Arnold Erie were married on October 3, 1948. Seven children were born into that union and they were married for 55 years. Arnold passed away November 9, 2003. Viola also has 17 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Viola took great pride in her family and their accomplishments.
Viola worked side by side with her husband on their farming/ranching operation. She hauled hay bales and did almost all the combining. Her sons had her riding combine with them this fall, which she thoroughly enjoyed. Viola was an amazing homemaker. She had huge gardens from which she canned vast amounts of produce. Everything was homemade--jellies, pickles, breads, buns, cookies, etc. She was a wonderful cook and it never bothered her to have unexpected guests at mealtimes. She would just add from her canned goods or freezer and set the extra plates. She loved to make family favorites for them---German chocolate cake, potato dumplings, gingersnap cookies, to name a few.
Viola loved flowers and always had beautiful flower beds around the house. Viola was also a seamstress and made all her daughters' dresses. The girls always had special Easter and Christmas dresses. Each of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren have some of her handiwork---quilts, baby blankets, rugs, crocheted or embroidered items. She loved to play cards and bingo and didn't like interruptions to these times. Viola enjoyed riding the train to see family and the Amtrak employees knew her by name. Viola's favorite color was lavender and she had a fondness for penguins, of which she had an extensive collection.
Arnold and Viola did a lot of square dancing in the 1980's. They served as president of the Powers Lake Square Dance Club (Swing and Twirl Club) at one time. Viola made all of their square dance attire and they danced with other clubs throughout North Dakota. Viola was a member of the Cottonwood Church, and later Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Powers Lake. She also was a member of the Golden Age Club in Stanley.
