Merle Mickelsen

U.S. Veteran

Merle Mickelsen, 88, of Stanley and Lostwood died early Friday morning at the Mountrail Bethel Home in Stanley. His funeral will be Saturday, December 22, at the Lostwood First English Free Lutheran AFLC at 2:00 pm. Visitation is Friday from 10 to 5 at Springan Funeral Home in Stanley. Burial is in the Lostwood Cemetery.

He was born December 3, 1924 to Mickarl and Elvina (Westergard) Mickelsen. He attended school through the 8th grade at Lostwood and had to learn to speak English as his parents were in the habit of speaking Danish. When Merle was age six in first grade he drew a picture of a sitting rabbit that his teacher Alice Cuff framed.

Merle was drafted to serve in the Army during WWII and was on the International Date Line when the war with Japan came to an end. He was discharged in the fall of 1945 and came home to farm where he loved to be. He enjoyed milking cows and selling the cream, and he hauled coal in all kinds of weather. Merle had a soft spot for his first car, a 1928 Model A. He was the second owner of this car and it got the kids to school through many bad weather and roads. He entered his car in many parades over the years. Merle also enjoyed going to Auction Sales. He was a life-time member of First English Free Lutheran Church (AFLC) of Lostwood. He was janitor and keeper of cemetery records for many years. His knowledge and interest in history allowed him to be part of the Stanley Historical Society. Merle suffered a stroke in 2009 and entered the Mountrail County Bethel Home.

He is survived by sisters, Elaine Hoseth, Stanley, ND, Ruth (David) Gould Agassiz, BC Canada, and brother, Anton (Myrna) Mickelsen, Stanley, ND and many nephews, nieces, great- nephews and great-nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mickarl and Elvina Mickelsen; brother, Lester; sister-in-law, Lavon Mickelsen; and three infant siblings. The family would like to encourage memorials go toward support of the Bethel Home, Stanley Hospital or Flickertail Village.
