Gregory James Carkuff, 61, Stanley, passed away peacefully Friday January 25, 2013 in his home, following a courageous two-and-a-half year battle with pancreatic cancer with his loving family by his side.

Greg was born on March 5, 1951 to James and Virginia (Stolldorf) Carkuff in Stanley. Greg graduated from Stanley High School in 1969 and attended UND Williston.

Greg was united in marriage to Mercedes "Mercy" Ahrens on October 22, 1977 in Hartsburg, Illinois. They made their life on the family farm and ranch southwest of Stanley. They were blessed with two sons, James and Jeremy.

Greg was an avid hunter and especially enjoyed hunting with his boys during deer season. He was active in his community, serving on the Farmers Union Oil Board of Directors for several years. He loved driving truck and running a hay operation. He also drove bus for BisMan Transit/CAT for five years after he retired from farming.

In his later years, he enjoyed spending time with his granddaughters, Isabelle and Lillian, as well as his nieces, Katarina and Madeline, and nephews, Zachary and Lucas. Greg enjoyed spending time with his friends, both in Stanley and Bismarck, whether it was working, having coffee, or going for a motorcycle ride.

Greg will be dearly missed by his family.

Greg is survived by his wife, Mercy; sons, James (RaeAnne) of Bismarck and Jeremy (Sarah) of Tioga; granddaughters, Isabelle and Lillian; sisters, Gerri Flaharty of Des Moines, Iowa, Joy Krush (Nick) of Mandan and Valerie Lommen (Jeff) of Rosemount, Minnesota nieces, Katarina and Madeline; and nephews, Zachary and Lucas. Greg was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Robert Flaharty.
