John W. Anderson

John William Anderson died August 12, 2013 in Tioga. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 17 at the St. James Catholic Church in Powers Lake. Prayer service and sharing of memories Friday, 7 to 9 p.m., at the Anderson farm. Visitation Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., in Springan Funeral Home, Stanley, and Saturday, 9 a.m. until the service , in the church

John was born in Powers Lake on February 27, 1932, to John and Ella (Olson) Anderson. He grew up in Powers Lake, graduated from Powers Lake High School, and attended North Dakota State University. He farmed and ranched near Powers Lake, and also worked with his father in the cattle-buying business. For a time they managed the Stanley Sales Ring.

John married Alice ‘Jean’ Lucy on December 17, 1953. They were partners in their farming and ranch business, and took great pride in the appearance and care of their farm. In 1977, they were recognized by the North Dakota Soil Conservation Service for their farming conservation practices.

John served on the Equity Elevator Board, Garness Township Board, Burke County Soil Conservation Board, and the Powers Lake Scale Association. John was also a 4-H Club leader and was a member of the St. James Catholic Church.

He enjoyed gardening, camping and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He loved to visit and enjoyed meeting new people. For John, a stranger was only a friend he hadn’t met yet! John struggled with Parkinson’s disease in recent years and deeply missed being able to visit with friends and family.

John is survived by his wife Jean, daughter Theresa (Terry Heuer) Anderson, Leonard, ND; sons Randy (Sue) Anderson, Vancouver, WA, and Jim (Mary) Anderson, Minnetonka, MN; grandchildren Aubrey (Don) Rohlik, Jen (Tyler) Hare, Katie Borkowski, Nick Borkowski, Emily Anderson and Jack Anderson; and great-grandchildren Jada Rohlik and Kyan Rohlik; and his sister Jean Rose, Spokane, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hospice Red River Valley, 1701 38th Street South, Suite 101, Fargo, ND 58103 or donor’s choice.
