I believe Mr. Hovland was the best music teacher around and I was blessed that he was mine. Many times we didn't see eye-to-eye and he would boot me out of the music room, mostly in band, because we all know that a teenager is much smarter than her remarkably intelligent bandmaster! He always allowed me back in, why I'll never know, because my clarinet would screech like a hawk and I was never any good; loved marching band too. He was also the best choir director ever and I was very proud to be a part of this class. Mr. Hovland was also my guitar teacher and I took lessons from him for several years, from 5th grade until I was a senior. There's no words to describe this man; he was talented beyond measure, led his choirs and bands to do things that we thought were impossible. Every time I hear the song "Leader of the Band" and I'm now sorry that I never told him that - at the end of the song it says "I am a living legacy of the leader of the band". That's us, his students, even though grown and much older ourselves, we are still a part of the legacy that he leaves behind. Mr. Hovland, you were and are loved. Thank you for all of the time you spent molding kids into musicians and singers. XXOO

To the family: May God keep you in his light during this most difficult time. Prayers from both Paul and me.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his entire family. Mr. Hovland was one of two teachers who had the most impact on my life. He instilled a deep sense of music appreciation to all who had him as their teacher, and his Army service inspired me to a career in the Air Force. I fondly remember all the music events we participated in under his leadership. When I talk about him, I say he was the best band director in North Dakota and Powers Lake was blessed to have him as a teacher for virtually his entire career!

One last time from the class of 1976: “To Sir With Love “. We dedicated that’s song to Mr. Hovland our Sr.year when we graduated from Powers Lake High School. He definitely deserves this song and so many more. Fly high Mr. Hovland and rest easy.
My sincere condolences to his family. We lost a good man, and yes he will be missed by so many of us. My prayers & hugs to all his family. Smile as you

Thank you, Mr. Hovland, for everything you did for me. You saw something in me I didn't know I had. You produced the musical I wrote, helped me go to Europe with the President's Band and influenced my entire life.
Thank you seems like such a small of sentiment for everything you gave me.
To the family, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mr. Hoveland was a inspiration to me and encouraged me to sing, play flute and he gave help to my classmates in forming a band. I wish his family blessing during your loss. Mr. Hoveland will always be a mentor teacher to me.
